Fredy Rangel in ¿Por qué caen las estatuas?

The fall of a statue does more than bring down a symbol; it is an act that challenges the official narrative. What takes the place of the toppled monument? What stories emerge when a pedestal is left empty?

From the Paris Commune to recent movements in Latin America, iconoclastic gestures have served as attempts to rewrite history and challenge the power these figures embody. In that emptiness, the possibility arises to imagine new memories and narratives yet to be constructed.

¿Por qué caen las estatuas? at Proyecto Poporopo presents an audiovisual essay that brings together artworks and texts reflecting on the destruction of statues and the symbolic power of empty pedestals. This exhibition features works by Fredy Rangel, Alejandro de la Guerra, Jorge de León, Lourdes de la Riva, and Pepe Orozco, alongside texts by Josseline Pinto, Wingston González, and Cristian Toj.

¿Por qué caen las estatuas? opens to the public on Thursday February 6 at Proyecto Poporopo (4a Calle 7-46 Zona 1, Guatemala City).
