SOFÍA NOVELLA
CIUDAD DE GUATEMALA, 1980.
Sofía Novella is a visual artist and mother. She lives and works in Guatemala City.
"My work relies on different media such as video, painting, sculpture and installation with flowers, to ephemerally activate public spaces. Each of my pieces seeks to establish connections between my personal experiences and common landscapes, creating bodies that materialize through the aromas, textures, and colors representative of the tropics.
The materiality of my works comes from daily care, the firm spontaneity of flowers and inherited tenderness. The beings resulting from these encounters seek to manifest themselves as a poetic gesture that, beyond recalling the transience of the candle and the flower, celebrate the persistence of life and foreshadow imminent regrowth.
My interest in extending the limits of my garden and inviting the observer into the intimacy of the everyday makes my work bloom unexpectedly amidst the cracks and cries of the city. I seek to activate portals that fill the streets with living and transitory sculptures, which transform over time, filling the public space with the caresses and scents of flowers, as well as with landscapes recovered from the intimate everydayness of the home."
